About David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH)
David is the creator of Ruby on Rails, a hugely successful and popular web-app framework which is used by many major internet services including Twitter, Airbnb, Shopify, and GitHub.
David invented the Rails solution in 2003. In 2004 he made the code available for free under an MIT open source license. This has enabled hundreds of thousands of people and/or organisations to use his work and further it's development.
David is cofounder and CTO of Basecamp. David's initial Rails development occurred while working on the Basecamp project management solution. The company was originally called 37signals. In 2014 it was renamed Basecamp.
In 2020 David and the Basecamp team (Jason Fried is CEO and cofounder) released HEY, a new alternative to Gmail and Outlook email. The solution uses a fresh approach to provide people a better relationship with their email.
David is a race car driver and has raced in the FIA World Endurance Championship. In 2014, David won his class with Aston Martin in the 82nd running of the 24 hours of Le Mans. The 24 hours of Le Mans is the world's biggest, and oldest, endurance race. The event is held each year at the Circuit de la Sarthe race course near the town of Le Mans, in France. See David's Le Mans Driver Profile here.
David also won the WEC championship in the GTE-Am category in 2014. He mostly raced in LMP2 prototypes, and finished on the podium at Le Mans four times.
David has described how Stoicism has helped him succeed. Stoicism is an ancient philosophy from the 3rd century BC. David has provided insights to his reading and learning about Stoicism in various interviews and podcasts. He's also made many book recommendations, including this one.
Having accumulated great knowledge and experience, David shares his wisdom as a best selling author. Books authored/coauthored by David:
